Markero is a private, end-to-end encrypted messenger for the web and Android. It does not require a phone number or an email address: accounts are username-only, and messages and files are encrypted on the device before they reach the server.
Markero publishes an official v3 onion service. It is an onion service, not a relay or exit node, and it is intended for journalists, activists, human-rights defenders, researchers and people in politically repressive environments who need to reach the service without exposing their network location.

Tor hides network origin, not identity. Voice calls and push notifications may be limited in Tor Browser; Premium checkout remains on the clearnet. Read the full announcement.
Markero offers 12 months of Premium access to qualifying journalists, activists, human-rights defenders and researchers. The programme is for people who need private communication without handing over a phone number, an email address or a public social graph.
We ask for a short affiliation or a verifiable public link. We do not ask for source identities, unpublished material, assignment details or a copy of your identity document.

Safety first. Tor hides your network origin from the server, not your identity, device or metadata. A compromised phone or laptop can expose messages before or after encryption. Use the security practices appropriate to your threat model, and use the safety and support networks available to you if you are in immediate danger.
Who qualifies? Professional and freelance journalists, newsroom support staff, human-rights defenders, activists and researchers who need private communication. We ask for a short affiliation or a verifiable public link, not source identities or sensitive assignment details.
What does the free Premium access include? Qualifying accounts receive 12 months of Premium features: 100 MB uploads, 1 GB personal storage, up to 5 private channels, 1 GB of storage per channel, and no subscriber cap on channels. Access is granted manually and can be renewed on request.
Do I have to use Tor? No. Tor is optional. Markero works on the clearnet and through an official onion service. Tor hides your network origin from the server, but not your identity, device or metadata.
Do I have to reveal my sources? No. We do not ask for source identities, unpublished material or assignment details. Verification is limited to confirming that you are who you say you are.

Please do not describe Markero as “audited” or “anonymous.” Username-only signup reduces the personal data required, but the server still processes metadata such as usernames, message timing and IP addresses used for rate limiting and stored in clearnet session records.
Upload the 2560×1440 PNG. YouTube crops channel art to a wide strip; the 2560×423 previews show the desktop crop, and the 1546×423 files show the central safe area where the wordmark, copy and chat preview sit. The chat preview uses fictional names and messages.
Product screenshots and a short demo are available on request. Please do not alter the logo or use it to imply an endorsement.

Legit.Show measured Markero Chat at 94/100 in its production-readiness benchmark (7/7 frames). This is an assessment of the public product surface, not a security audit.

Correction policy: if we got a technical claim wrong, tell us and we will correct it in public. Security questions are welcome; we would rather answer a hard question than hide a limitation.
