Use http, not https. Tor encrypts the connection between Tor Browser and the onion service. The address below is the only official Markero onion address.

Tor access is for journalists and their sources, activists, human-rights defenders, researchers, and people in politically repressive environments — including families and supporters of political prisoners — who need to reach Markero without exposing their network location.

Markero does not require a phone number or an email address. That removes one obvious identity link, but it does not make an account anonymous by itself.

Know someone who needs this?

Markero is a private, end-to-end encrypted messenger with no phone number or email. Official Tor address: http://yl3gb7w3yej6y2mdeqdxx6rtztgvjlxnwqrk77same5sejlqygcb63qd.onion/ — clearnet: https://chat.markero.eu/tor

What Tor protects

Network origin

  • The Markero server does not see the IP address of an onion visitor.
  • Requests arrive through the local Tor daemon.

Transport

  • Tor encrypts the path between Tor Browser and the onion service.
  • The onion site is served over HTTP because Tor already provides transport encryption.

Message content

  • Markero's end-to-end encryption still applies.
  • The server stores ciphertext, not readable messages.

No clearnet dependency

  • Pages, assets and WebSockets are served through the onion origin.
  • The clearnet site remains available separately.

What Tor does not protect

How to connect

  1. Install Tor Browser.
  2. Open the official onion address. Use http, not https.
  3. Create a username-only account or log in. Clearnet and onion sessions are separate.

If the onion address does not load, check that Tor Browser is connected and that the address was copied completely. The address is 56 characters followed by .onion.

Does Tor Browser need JavaScript?

Yes, for the web client. Tor Browser's Safest security level disables JavaScript, including on onion pages. Markero generates and unlocks your PGP keys in your browser, so the web client cannot sign in or decrypt messages without it. We will not move that work to the server because it would break end-to-end encryption.

Set Tor Browser to Standard for this onion site, or use the Markero Android app with Orbot if you need JavaScript disabled. Read the full explanation.

Tor is not a substitute for operational security. It reduces network-level exposure; it does not protect a compromised device or careless identity disclosures. If you are in immediate danger, use the safety and support networks appropriate to your situation.

Verify this is Markero

The Markero website uses this OpenPGP fingerprint for official signed statements:

744DE436A4CC54CA8849E78C2C0AE9672C7BE27E

The public key is available at /pgp-key.asc and in security.txt. A copycat can copy a public key, so compare the fingerprint through a separate trusted channel before trusting another site that looks like Markero.
